The works signed by journalist Liviu Alexa have attracted the attention of international art critics, who speak of an unexpected phenomenon in the contemporary art market. In the analysis published in the specialized press, the appearance of the Romanian artist is described as a signal that the public is starting to move away from the dominant directions and is looking for something else.

Critics claim that, currently, there is an increasingly visible dissatisfaction among the public. According to them, people are tired of abstract works that are difficult to understand, complicated conceptual installations and an artistic style that seems to communicate only with a narrow circle of insiders.

The debut that took the market by surprise

The debut of Liviu Alexa in February 2026 is presented as an atypical case. Without specialized studies in art, without connections in important galleries and without the classic path of an artist, he opened an exhibition at the Cluj-Napoca Art Museum and set prices considered very high for a debutant.

The result was unexpected. In just one month, the exhibition attracted thousands of paying visitors, setting a record for the museum, and the works sold for sums reaching around 15,000 euros each. The interest went beyond Romania's borders, and publications such as Kaltblut Magazine, 1883 Magazine and Ladygunn reported on this phenomenon.

Later, a second exhibition organized at Kulterra Gallery confirmed the public's interest, with sales, high audience and debates around the adopted style.

The question that bothers critics

Critics ask the central question: how is it possible for a 46-year-old investigative journalist with no formal art training to achieve results that artists with established careers do not achieve?

The explanation advanced in the international analysis is that the contemporary art market is at a point of impasse. Galleries are described as full of works that convey nothing or that communicate exclusively with a narrow audience consisting of curators, collectors and critics.

"The general public was systematically excluded, treated with condescension, made to feel stupid because it 'doesn't understand' what it sees. And the public, in the end, left," says Liviu Alexa.

Hard criticism of contemporary art

At the same time, abstract expressionism, once considered revolutionary, is described by critics as having become a convenient formula, used by artists who no longer convey clear ideas, but protect themselves behind ambiguity.

In contrast, the works of Liviu Alexa are presented as being built around stories. His paintings include characters, details and narratives that can be gradually discovered without requiring complicated explanations.

The “Filcai” series, the example that explains the success

The “Filcai” series is offered as an example. In it, the artist reinterpreted twenty cards from a traditional Transylvanian game, transforming each element into a contemporary character. The ogre becomes garbage, Cleopatra delivers shaorma and talks on the phone with disgruntled customers, and the Spectacle is presented as a character who observes the world from a modern perspective.

Critics believe that this kind of approach responds to a real need of the public: to see, understand and feel something in front of a work of art, without the need for explanation complex.

Controversial but assumed prices

Another aspect discussed is that of prices. Liviu Alexa's works are sold for approximately 12,000 euros or more much, which generated criticism and accusations of immodesty. The analysis, however, claims that these prices are part of a clear positioning: art that communicates directly with the public should be valued in the same way as conceptual art.

A phenomenon that goes beyond a single artist

The phenomenon is also explained by a broader change of perspective. The international press paid attention to this case not only for the unusual story of a journalist turned artist, but also for the fact that it could indicate a change in the way the public and the market relate to art.

Critics point out that the problem is not the style itself, but the way certain artistic directions have become repetitive formulas. Names such as Mark Rothko or Willem de Kooning are invoked to show that abstract expressionism had a real impact in the past, but that its current use is often lacking in substance.

In the analysis dedicated to the phenomenon, the influence of Liviu Alexa's training as an investigative journalist is also emphasized. In this area, the lack of content cannot be hidden and the message must be conveyed clearly and directly. The same approach is also identified in his paintings, where each work must capture the attention and provide a message.

The exhibitions organized so far are described not as mere presentations of works, but as communication events with the public. The artist has chosen to create works that can be analyzed, criticized and understood, assuming the reactions they can generate.

Two exhibitions in just a few months, dozens of works sold, thousands of visitors and international attention – all these are presented as elements of a phenomenon that goes beyond the individual case.

According to the critics, the public is again looking for stories, emotion and meaning in art, and the success of Liviu Alexa could be an indication that this change is already underway.
